The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the exiles of Israel (Psalm 147) The Jerusalem Temple, the place of the continual cult of the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the G-d of all Israel, was the place where the song of the Levites accompanied the Priests making sacrifices. After the destruction of the Temple, cantors took over and carried on the mission of the Levites. So it is to this day. Entering the synagogue, we symbolically cross the threshold of the Jerusalem Temple and, as in days of old, hear the same words: “The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers the exiles of Israel” (Psalm 147).
